Tavian's room re-do

Last year I made a list of my goals for the year, and included was the redesign of my eldest son's bedroom.  I had redecorated his room about two years ago over one weekend as a surprise, but it ended up being sort of a disaster.  First of all, I intended to tear up the carpet and paint the tile underneath.   I did all sorts of research on how to paint vinyl tiles, but when we pulled up the carpet we realized that the tiles were damaged and cracked (perhaps why the room was carpeted in the first place!)  We had to rush up to Colorado Springs and buy a bunch of wood laminate flooring to install.  It wasn't in the budget, and we hadn't allotted time for the project.  Secondly, I chose two colors for accent walls, a bright citron yellow and a swimming pool blue.  I thought it would be cheerful, like sipping lemonade next to a pool in summertime.  The yellow ended up being the most garish color possible, and I hated it from the start.  We had already blown our money on flooring, so buying different paint was not in the cards.  There were a couple of things that did turn out well however.  I drew up plans for a headboard with a frosted Plexiglas top and lights inside that my father put together with extra materials from his own remodeling endeavors.  
   The best things about this new room are the furniture.  I came across a rare Kent Coffey dresser at a Mennonite thrift store, and then my father in law built a desk based on photos to mirror the styling.   I also found an industrial looking 1950s Dazor saucer lamp at an estate sale for $4!  The vintage light up globe was thrifted and the starburst alarm clock was from a local antique store.  The ceiling lamp is an atomic pinhole light fixture that I rescued from the Habitat store, which I repainted and rewired.  The gold Eames chair knock off was a DIY I made last year, which you can see here.

Duvet originally from Target, but I bought it on ebay.

The canvases were up-cycled amateur thriftstore art, that were primed and painted with chalkboard paint. The nightstand was handmade by my father in law.  The framed paint chip art matches the duvet and was FREE!  Steampunk hat, created by my son, leather Indian headdress was handmade by me.  Retro styled clock was a gift from my mom.

The military jacket belonged to my father in law.  WWI planes built by my son.  The stuffy is a Minecraft Creeper.

Framed artwork is based off of a real WWI stamp from a German camera company, available here.  On display are my son's vintage camera collection, original Lego designs, tanks, handmade wooden aircraft carriers and planes, and his Playmobil western village.  My son is all about "displays." :)

Framed German zeppelin poster available here.  Wooden bow was handmade by my late grandfather and "Zorro" mask was from Party City.  The Zeppelin model was a Christmas present, source unknown.

The room is painted Behr's French Silver and all the painted furniture is done in Behr's Mermaid Harbour.

Now I just have to convince him to come back from grandma's house to see his new room.

Wrapped up in a bow (outfit #33)

I found this darling 1960s red wiggle dress at a thrift store.  I love the two bows at the waist and the faux fur cuffs.  It reminds me of something Joan from Mad Men would wear to a debauchery filled holiday party.  My pearl, grape cluster, clip-on earrings were thrifted.  The Brownie "Holiday" camera is from my collection.  These cameras were produced sometime between 1953-57.

Master bedroom

I'm finally ready to reveal our master bedroom!  It's really my own unique style; part mid-century, part girly glam.  I was inspired by some of my current color obsessions; navy blue, aqua, and mint green.  I added some peach and gold accents in the artwork to help warm up the space.  I tried to add plenty of reflective surfaces, neutral white and gauzy sheer curtains to brighten up the room.  It was a bold choice to go so dark with the wall color, but I'm really happy with the space.  It manages to be soothing, without being boring. 

The wall color is Behr's Darkest Navy.  The antique iron bed frame was mine in high school.  I used a thrifted, embossed, chenille bedspread as a bed skirt.  I love the fringe!  The mid-century, metal, rolling, record cart was a gift from a friend.  I found the Crosley suitcase record player at an estate sale for cheap.  The white hanging light is a puzzle lamp from good ole Ikea.  The letters over the bed are actually 3-D cardboard letters that I sprayed gold.  The are super lightweight, so if they fall off the wall in the middle of the night, we won't be killed by LOVE. ;)

The nightstand was thrifted and then painted a pale minty blue.  The blue, Zenith alarm clock/ tube radio is from the 1950s.  It only gets AM stations, but it sounds crystal clear! The "You and me are meant to be" screen print was ordered on Etsy. 

The Thonet chair at my sewing nook, was purchased at the Denver Modernism Show, and then recovered in the same Amy Butler Honeycomb fabric as the Mod Podged desk.  My wool chevron rug came from ebay.  Our matching Drexel dresser set came from an Estate sale for $50 for the pair!! I'm still doing cartwheels over that bargain! I have some of my vintage hats and small purses hanging from hooks on either side of my dresser.  It's a nice way to keep everything organized, and also display some of my favorite accessories.  We have an aqua Princess phone and the coolest turquoise, spinning pen holder.  The aqua, 1950s, deer, TV lamp came from ebay, but the two tiered fiberglass lampshade came from a yard sale for .50!!  I framed a 1950s swimsuit ad, and some of my favorite vintage cameras are displayed throughout our room.

The mint "Happy Happy" screen print is from Etsy.  The mint green floor fan was originally a standard, black plastic fixture, which met with some Krylon Pistachio and Silver spray paint.  I think it gives it a nice retro feel, but I don't have to worry about severed fingers, like with the genuine antique fans.  Those vintage metal fans are a thing of beauty, but those wide slats in the screen terrify me!

More vintage cameras, including a Brownie with flash, and the Bolex, I used in my film school days.  The mini bullet planter was thrifted and my kitschy little owl bank came from the same estate as my dressers.  It's the wrong era, but I couldn't resist it's cuteness.  The "I freaking love you" screenprint came from here and the "Home sweet home" screenprint came from here.
