Tartan Tart (outfit #23)

It's almost getting too chilly, here in Colorado, to do these outdoor outfit posts.  I'm going to have to be on the lookout for some cute vintage sweaters and coats!  I absolutely love the fall.  It puts me in the mood to cook spicy foods, drink chai, and snuggle up with a good book.  This dress reminds me of the colors of autumn, and my t-straps are perfect for crunching leaves underfoot.
This is my 1950s olive and orange plaid day dress, purchased from the Robot Exchange.  My olive and brown T-strap heels are not vintage, but were thrifted, as was the corset belt.

Winnie's room

As promised, I'm sharing some pictures of our little girl's room.  The room is ever changing, as she grows, and her needs change.  People were really surprised, that after three sons, I would choose to paint our first daughter's room blue.  My husband jokes that I was "hedging my bets."  Admittedly, we really weren't convinced that we would get a girl.  After I gave birth, my husband asked, "did anyone check and see if it's really a girl?"  I told them not to check, "just let me  have my moment!"  I think eventually, I may paint it a soft pink, but it is certainly very girly already.

The wood floors in this room were in really bad shape.  I didn't even notice them when we bought the house, because I was too busy checking closet size and counting windows.  They had furniture strategically placed to hide the worst of it.  We recently stained and varnished them a darker walnut color, and it does a nice job of making the damage look antique, rather than just beat to hell. :)  The dresser was a thrift store purchase ($25!) which was sanded and painted white.  The curtains are made from Heather Bailey's Pop Garden line in aqua and have coordinating pastel chevron panels on the bottom.  We keep her fabric covered vintage suitcase under the crib to hold extra crib sheets.

The dress on the wall is 1950s and is from my daughter's collection.  I change out the dresses on the wall periodically.

I sewed the clouds out of felt and embroidery floss, then stuffed them with cotton balls.  The framed embroidery is a metro map of Paris.  My daughter's ultrasound is in a frame my husband bought for me that says, "Out of our dreams, and into our arms."

I originally bought this lidded container to make a terrarium, but instead I started filling it with vintage barrettes, pins, and jewelry (and a bunny!) that I've collected from estate sales.

I made a vintage style silhouette of my daughter using black vinyl adhesive and stuck it on a scrap piece of chevron fabric in an embroidery hoop.  The french alphabet print, french couple under the umbrella print, Keep it Peachy print, and Cat's Pajamas postcard are all from Etsy.  The framed paper dolls are a free printable from the Black Apple.  The butterfly specimen was scored at a thrift store for .50!!  The large pink art is scrapbook paper glued on canvas with woodland paper dolls  that I also ordered from Etsy.  I used black glitter scrapbook letters to spell out a message in French, that when translated means, "sweet dreams, little friends...goodnight."

This 1960s Desk was thrifted and painted white.  We use it as a changing table for now, but it will transition nicely into a homework space.   Elowyn loves staring at the Paris paper cut map, handmade fabric bunting, and hot air balloon stickers above her.  The bunting says, "oh my darlin," an ode to one of her middle names, Clementine.

This strange little alcove is where one of the dormer windows is located.  I thrifted a mosquito net canopy to put into the space.  She can close the opening to make it like a fort, but it's transparent so I can still be nosy. :)  I used Mod Podge to cover a plain white shelf with the same fabric as the curtains.

Smoke stacks (outfit #22)

Here is a lovely 1950s, navy and white pinstripe dress, from R & K Originals.  I purchased this dress from Etsy.  The navy luggage and hair fascinator with veil are from the 40s and were picked up at an estate. My lipstick is Revlon's "Certainly Red," introduced in 1951, and still available today.

My 1950s day dress, purchased from the Robot Exchange.  The fabric design is pretty abstract, but it reminds me of sailboat steering wheels.

Sunny disposition (outfit # 19)

I bought this dress from the Denver Modernism show.  It's a 1950s plaid sundress with the sweetest little button straps.  My 1950s, aqua, cat eye sunglasses are from a shop on Etsy.

Cooking up somethin' yummy

I've been a very bad blogger lately.  My whole family got really sick, and my three boys missed almost an entire week of school!  Poor little Elowyn was the last to get infected, and she ended up in the hospital for three days getting breathing treatments.  It was frightening and exhausting, and it made me really thankful that my children are generally healthy.  I've also been a busy little bee, working on house projects, and getting things together to start an Etsy shop.  Yep, that's right, I'm going to start selling some of the little treasures I come across.  It was either that or risk becoming a total hoarder. ;)  I'm going to try and play catch up with my outfit posts and you might get bombarded with a couple back to back.  In the mean time, I hope you'll be sated with sweet little play kitchen update that I did for my darling daughter.
I had a hand me down wooden kitchen that was in need of some love.  Things were starting to break and it was looking pretty pathetic.  I figured, while I was repairing, I might as well glamourify too, right?  This is what the kitchen looked like originally:
Now imagine that this kitchen got rolled down a steep hill, glass breaking, handles coming loose, hinges bending, clock hands flying off, etc...'cause that's how mine looked!  I hauled this breast down the stairs and out the door, BY MYSELF! I'm not sure how I didn't get pinned underneath, or break a toe, but I'm sort of a awesome when I set my mind to something. :)
After everything was cleaned off, and handles removed, the whole piece got primed and sprayed glossy white.  All the handles were sprayed silver.  I mixed the blue from MY kitchen cabinets with the leftover mint color from my sewing nook desk and painted the appliances.  I used Mod Podge to adhere a piece of fabric for the backsplash and number keys (taken from a brochure I cut up) to the microwave control panel.  The stove burners are black vinyl adhesive that I cut into spiral pattern.

The "on" button is actually the word NO that I flipped upside down, clever right?  The aqua salt and pepper shakers are from an estate and the straw inlaid bowl was thrifted.  1950s plastic ware is perfect for a toy kitchen!
Toy Pyrex is the coolest!
I ordered a red rotary toy phone to hang on the fridge, but it hasn't arrived yet.  What do you think?
I repainted the inside of the closet with zigzags to mimic the pattern on her curtains.  The top shelf is where all her vintage hats are stored for future dress up fun.  The floor is in terrible shape, but as soon as that is handled, I'll post pics of the entire room. xox
